Invest in Bonds?

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008

Would signing Barry Bonds to fill the gap created by Big Papi’s injury and potential extended stay on the DL be the equivalent of selling our souls the devil?

Media circus aside, where else could we get a bat of his quality without having to give up a Masterson, Bowden, Lowrie, etc.?  And is there a better clubhouse in baseball that could absorb Bonds and all that goes along with him – aside perhaps any grudge as a a result of some of Schilling’s strong comments over the past two years?  Finally, might the past six months and the lack of interest by any of the 30 MLB clubs have been a somewhat humbling experience to Bonds and, dare I say it, a reality check that took him down a peg?

And, supposedly, Bonds really liked Boston when he was here visiting his son who was attending one of the local prep schools.

So, do we take a guy who put up put up a 1.045 OPS, slugged .565, and had an OBP of .485 last year (with no defensive liability in the AL)?

Living on the edge (of the hood)

Monday, June 2nd, 2008

As great as it is to live in Southie, and as nice as our apartment is, the harsh reality is that we literally live a block away from “the hood”; in this case the Old Colony Housing Projects.

We were reminded of this reality on Saturday night.  When returning from our fun-filled evening of poker, pizza and beer at the Conman’s in tony West Newton I found our street being shut down by Metro Boston Police paddy wagons, Boston Housing Police cruisers, fire trucks and ambulances.  Turns out there was a big brawl right near our house and some guy stepped in to try and stop it and (in the words of “Oz”) got shanked and died.

Cops have been on regular patrol the last two days and the obligatory sidewalk shrine with photos, posters, graffiti and candles has been set up.

You can read all about it here – http://www.bostonherald.com/news/regional/general/view.bg?articleid=1097997&format=text.

Might be time to start thinking about moving to the `burbs…

Indy 4

Sunday, June 1st, 2008

OK, as much as it pains me to admit, I have to agree with Glen – Indy 4 was a disappointment.  Harrison Ford definitely “under-acted”, Karen Allen had no business being in a summer blockbuster, the story went back and forth between weird and lame and Cate Blanchett’s character was annoying.  While it was cool to “catch up” with these characters, I think it might have been better to having the final memory of Indy riding off into the sunset in “Last Crusade” rather than what we were left with at the end of “Crystal Skull”.
